Arlington Spirit (Summer All-Star Program)
General InformationUpdatedSunday April 18, 2021 byPaul Bolejack.
AGSA is pleased to announce that we will be running the Summer All Star Spirit program for the 2021 summer season. We plan to have teams at 8U, 10U, 12U and 15U levels. The decision on how many teams we will have for each age group depends upon: 1) The availability of appropriate quality coaches; 2) Sufficient interest in participation; 3) Adequate participation in key skills positions (pitcher and catcher) that could allow the team to be competitive at the All Star level.
Coaches for the AGSA All-star Spirit program have been selected and are: Graham McBride (8u), Joe Kammerman (10u), Mike Evans (12u) and Paul Bolejack (15u). This program depends upon having dedicated coaches who want to see girls improve their skills in a positive and fun setting. We hope to once again be able to hire some additional help to provide some skills coaching for hitting, catching, fielding and game management. The All-star Spirit teams will be supported by the AGSA in terms of handling all rostering and tournament entries. Coaches will set the team schedule – and AGSA will help in identifying potential scrimmage teams as well as appropriate tournaments.
The concept of this program is to allow girls who want to improve their softball skills; play at a more competitive level and have a taste of the travel/tournament programs to have a chance to do that. This program has be running for over 5 years now and many of the former SAS/Spirit players have shown up on travel rosters within the Sage as well as beyond. Some have been seen on various high school JV and Varsity teams. The great success of this program is that there seems to be increased interest each year.
2021 All-star Spirit teams are open only to girls playing in the House leagues in Spring 2021.
This is a competitive program and playing time is not guaranteed. The goal is to provide an opportunity for those players who are interested in improving their softball skills and/or playing in a tournament or travel setting. Players are expected to participate in Spirit practices in addition to House games and practices. For the summer season, players will participate in 1-2 weekly practices/games and up to 3 tournaments, mostly in Northern Virginia and Suburban Maryland. For players, there will be an additional cost for participation in the SAS program. Scholarships are available.
There will be no playing up. We may have multiple teams in one age group. Additional information will be sent out once coaches are selected in early April. We plan on having open practices in late April, with tryouts conducted in early May and the team selected soon after tryouts. Player available is a very important part of the selection process and coaches will require information on summer availability as part of the tryouts.
